Why HLO KidCo?

Training in the performing arts has long been recognized as a strong self-esteem builder.  Youth with high self-esteem are in a better position to develop academic excellence and prepare for a vital adult life.

In the Winter of 1999, Humboldt Light Opera Company voted to pursue the development of a year-round, education-based performing arts program for Humboldt county youth, ages 5 to 18, entitled HLO KidCo.  This worthwhile venture has already achieved exciting results!  To date, over 250 youth, from Bridgeville to Trinidad, have experienced the many positive benefits of the performing arts.  Our Spring 2000 season consisted of  nine classes at two convenient locations in Arcata and Eureka, serving a average of 100 students per session.  We expect that we will continue to add and expand the class offerings as interest increases.

The goal of the KidCo program is to provide quality education in the skills of musical theatre.  Singing, dancing, and acting are taught in combination with theatre games and stage etiquette.  At the end of each session we give a workshop performance showcasing skills the kids are learning.

HLO KidCo provides kids with a positive, healthy environment where they can learn team work, discipline, problem solving, and communication skills.  They also experience the pride of accomplishment and have fun along the way.
