OOMIAK Foundation There is nothing more frightening for a parent than having a child who is seriously injured or ill. This situation gets worse when parents learn that the only medical options for their child are located out of the area. Humboldt County has excellent health care professionals and facilities. However, accident and burn victims, children with cancer, liver problems, cardiac conditions, neonatal complications and a host of other serious, yet curable conditions, often require travel to distant locations for specialized pediatric treatment. When local residents Dan and Wendy Cooper experienced this situation, they established to Oomiak Foundation, which provides financial support for families who must seek medical treatment for their children outside of Humboldt County. Such support eases the burden of travel, including expresses such as gas, airfare, meals, hotels and even child care for siblings left at home. Considering that these parents are facing mounting medical bills and , for some, even lost wages, the Oomiak Foundation understands that financial support allows parents to focus on what is most important - the care and treatment of their child.
