Based on a delightful and inspiring book by author Jean Rogers and artist Rie Munoz, the musical King Island Christmas comes alive through the talents of composer David Friedman and lyricist Deborah Baley Brevoort.  It is the story of 150 Alaskan villagers who refuse to accept that stormy seas could prevent the arrival of the yearly visit from their priest.  these tenacious people literally carried a traditional walrus hide boat (oomiak) over the steep mountains and rowed it out to gather up the priest and small gifts for the children.  It is a lovely, courageous tale of challenge, cooperation and spirit.  A perfect story for the Humboldt Light Opera company, HLO KidCO and College of the Redwoods.

This musical is above all else the story of community, which makes it a wonderful vehicle to help launch the new Oomiak Foundation, a local organization that has formed to support Humboldt County families who must take their children outside of the area for medical treatment.  This production will be the first fund-raiser for this much-needed organization and certainly fits in with the goals of the Oomiak Foundation- if we all work together as a community, we can get our children the medical assistance they need.

Our opening night performance (December 1), will be attended by the composer David Friedman.  A strong supporter of the foundation, he has given his full support to this HLOC production.  many of you are already familiar with Mr. Friedman's work, as he is best known for his contributions as a conductor and vocal arranger for such Disney productions as "Beauty and the Beast", Pocahontas", and "Aladdin".
