Based on the novella by Elizabeth Spencer, The Light in the Piazza follows young American tourist, Clara, and her mother, Margaret Johnson, as they embark on a journey of self-discovery in Florence, Italy.
As if guided by an unseen hand, the Florentine winds whisk away Clara’s hat to land it at the feet of Fabrizio, a handsome young Italian. As fate should have it, an intense romance is sparked between the two. Margaret, extremely protective of her daughter, attempts to keep them apart. As the story unfolds the secret of the mother’s conflict is revealed. Florence forces her to consider not only her daughter’s future but her own.
This 2005 Tony Award winner written by Adam Guettel, grandson of Richard Rogers, is filled with lush music and rich characters. Directed by Jean Bazemore, the cast will feature Carol and Fiona Ryder as mother and daughter, with Paula Proctor, Bill Ryder, Kevin Richards, James Gadd, and Molly Severdia as the Italian family. A full orchestra will be conducted by Justin Sousa.
